Nanoparticle-enhanced coolants (NPECs) are increasingly being used in minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) machining as eco-friendly alternatives to conventional cutting fluids, aiming for sustainable manufacturing. However, there is still a lack of understanding regarding the thermophysical properties of NPECs during processing, which hinders precise guidance and selection principles for industrial applications. Therefore, this paper provides a review of the action mechanism, processing properties, and future development directions of NPECs. Firstly, the influence of nano-enhanced phases and base fluids on the processing performance is discussed, along with an elaboration on the dispersion stabilization mechanism of NPECs during preparation. Subsequently, the unique molecular structure and physical properties of NPECs are examined to elucidate their mechanisms related to heat transfer, penetration, and anti-friction effects. Additionally, the effectiveness of NPECs is investigated through a comprehensive quantitative evaluation of material removal characteristics in turning, milling, and grinding applications. Finally, research gaps and future directions for further applications of NPECs in the industry are presented.
