Special Issue: Atmospheric and earth system modeling towards coordinated pollution control and climate change mitigation

Air pollution control efforts worldwide are advancing into a new stage with a coordinated approach focusing on reducing fine particulate matter and ozone. These measures have been successful in the past decade. Additionally, many countries have set targets to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060-2070, necessitating substantial efforts in the coming decades. Modeling tools are critical to evaluate and design effective and economic friendly strategies as they include previous knowledge and experiences. The world's crucial role in simultaneously addressing challenges like reducing fine particulate and ozone pollution while advancing pollution control and carbon reduction underscores the paramount need for effective strategies in today's global context. Integrated assessment models are also important to evaluate the costs and benefits of past or proposed strategies. New models or new versions of existing models are needed to fill the gap of requirements. This special issue focuses on development and improvement of atmospheric and earth systems models as well as integrated assessment models to help understand air pollution control and transport/transformation of contaminants/greenhouse gases cross multiple earth spheres, with the aim of facilitating coordinated pollution control and climate change mitigation. Application of such models in investigating pollutants/greenhouse gases globally or in different regions are welcome. Evaluations of existing models or directions for future developments are also encouraged.

Typical topics may include, but not limited to,

l Development and investigation of atmospheric and earth system models for coordinated pollution control and climate change mitigation;

l Using integrated approach including kinetics, mechanism and integrated assessment models to coordinately evaluate cost and benefits of various pollution and establish climate change mitigation strategies;

l Improvements of existing models by adding new parameterizations or chemical/physical processes;

Application of models in investigating pollutants in multiple earth spheres;

l Evaluations of existing models and directions for future model developments.
