FESE Call for papers: “Climate Change and Public Health: Emerging impacts and responses”

Health risks from changing climate is regarded as one the greatest challenges for humankinds in the 21st century. Exposures to heatwaves, extreme rainfalls, wildfires, regional sea level rises, and climate-sensitive infectious diastases will cause harm to human health both physical and mentally. On the other hand, however, mitigation of and adaption to climate change might also benefit human health through multiple pathways. For instance, improved air quality due to reduced fossil fuel usage will reduce mortalities related to lung cancer, increasing cities resilience to urban flooding might prevent the transmission of water-borne diseases, and more urban greenness will reduce urban heat and improve air quality. Great inequalities are also embodied in the health impacts distribution of climate change and the effectiveness of mitigation and adaptation measures, given the varying climatic, geographical and socio-economic status. Therefore, it is important to identify the health damages related to climate change and responses to them, across different locations, time scope and population.

Regarding the complexity and diversity of climate and health issues, the scientific community needs more in-depth research by scholars from different disciplines and regions. To shed light on impacts and responses to public health risks of climate change, Frontiers of Environmental Science and Engineering decided to launch this call for advances in research regarding climate change and public health, including public health impacts of climate change, public health co-benefits of net-zero carbon transitions, adaptations to public health risk from climate change et al. We aim to provide a platform for global decision makers, stakeholders, scientists and engineers to share their outstanding research and exchange their inspiring ideas. Original research papers, reviews, perspectives, and views are all welcomed.

Topics may include but not limited to,

l Public health impacts, exposure, and vulnerability related to heatwaves and rising temperature, extreme weather events (extreme rainfall, floods, droughts, wildfires and cyclones) air pollution, and climate-sensitive infectious diseases.

l Public health impacts related to food security, dietary and nutrition under climate change.

l Public health co-benefits of low-carbon and net-zero-carbon technologies, carbon mitigation policies, and other mitigation or adaptation measures.

l Establishing climate-resilient public health technologies, policies and infrastructure, including healthy cities under climate change, climate-resilient urban planning.

l Vulnerable populations and inequalities of exposures to health risks related to climate change.

About FESE:

Frontiers of Environmental Science and Engineering (FESE, indexed by SCI, 2021 IF 6.048), is an international journal for researchers interested in a wide range of environmental disciplines. The journal’s aim is to advance and disseminate knowledge in all main branches of environmental science & engineering. The journal emphasizes papers in developing fields, as well as papers showing the interaction between environmental disciplines and other disciplines. FESE is a monthly journal. Its peer-reviewed contents consist of a broad blend of reviews, research papers, short communications, views, and perspectives.
