Abstract
The structural response of cable-stayed bridges is highly indeterminate. In addition, prestressing applied to the stay cables alters the internal forces and deformations of all structural elements both during construction and in service conditions. Numerous studies have proposed algorithms to simulate the structural response during the cable-tensioning process; however, these methods rely on predefined tensioning strategies that specify both the sequence of operations and the jacking forces applied at each stage. In bridges erected using the temporary support method, these strategies are commonly defined empirically, based on the designer’s previous experience and on the use of fixed percentages of the final prestressing forces introduced during construction. This study addresses that limitation by introducing a heuristic optimization approach to determine the optimal tensioning strategy for cable-stayed bridges constructed with temporary supports. The proposed methodology is validated through its application to a steel cable-stayed bridge located in Wuxi, China. A comparison between the optimized and original tensioning procedures demonstrates the structural advantages achieved through the proposed optimization approach.
