The State Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Materials and Technologies at Sun Yat-Sen University, China

2012, Volume 7, Number 3

The State Key Laboratory of Optoelectronic Materials and Technologies (OEMT) at Sun Yat-Sen University has been established since 2001 when it was jointly founded by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China and the Guangdong Provincial Government. The OEMT has Professor Ningsheng Xu, an Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, as its Director, and Professor Zhizhan Xu, also an Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, as the Chairman of Academic Committee.

Research at the OEMT covers the areas of display materials and technologies, photo-electric energy conversion materials and technologies, integrated optoelectronic devices and technologies, synthesis and preparation of optoelectronic materials, ultrafast science and technology, and fundamental theories of optoelectronic materials and devices. Currently, there are 7 research laboratories under the OEMT umbrella:
        i) Research Laboratory for Display Materials and Technology,
ii) Research Laboratory for Ultrafast Science and Technology,
iii) Research Laboratory for Optoelectronic Integration and Lasers,
iv) Research Laboratory for Material Synthesis and Preparation,
        v) Research Laboratory for Optoelectronic Nano-materials and Technology,
vi) Research Laboratory for Optoelectronic Materials Characterization and Technology, and
vii) Research Laboratory for Optoelectronic Theory.

The OEMT has received 4 second-class National Natural Science Awards and 7 Provincial / Ministerial level science and technology Awards. Since 2007, scientists at the OEMT have published more than 1300 peer-reviewed papers in SCI journals, including Physical Review Letters, Progress in Materials Science, Advanced Materials, Angewandte Chemie International Edition, Journal of the American Chemical Society, etc., and have applied for over 380 international and national invention patents, over 170 of which were granted.

At present, the OEMT has a 56-strong research staff. Among them are 4 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 “Thousand-Talent Programme” distinguished professors, 7 “Cheung-Kong Scholars Programme” chair professors, and 13 holders of National Outstanding Youth Science Fund. 18 members of staff have been selected for the “Trans-century Talents Development Programme” or the “New Century Excellent Talents Scheme” of the Ministry of Education, and 5 received the “National Excellent Ph.D. Dissertation Award”

The OEMT has about 30000 m2 of experimental research space, and is equipped with advanced facilities, which include about 200 million RMB worth of high-value instruments. The OEMT provides advanced research platforms for researchers from all over the world in ultrafast science and technology, micro- and nano-fabrication, optoelectronic & photonic integration, optical film preparation, solar cell materials research, etc.

The OEMT has established close academic exchange and collaboration programmes with renowned research institutions in Australia, Israel, Japan, Russia, UK, USA and many other countries. Currently, the OEMT is a member of the international project of space experiment “Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS)” led by Prof. C. C. Ting, the 1976 Nobel Prize laureate in physics.
