A large amount of somatic genomic mutations have been reported in tumor samples of patients with lung squamous cell carcinoma. Here, Zhang, Qu, and Zhou et al. report that the counterpart normal lung tissues also harbor somatic genomic variations that are absent in tumor samples of patients or the human genome references.
