The pollution of high-altitude lake basins by agriculture and rural activities, as well as the control measures taken to address this issue, have garnered significant attention from academic research and government policy in China. Various restrictions and regulations have been implemented to safeguard the quality of surface water. However, these measures have had significant impacts on the agricultural systems and rural livelihoods surrounding these lake basins. Taking the Erhai Lake basin in Yunnan Province as a case study, three main challenges have been identified in simultaneously reducing pollution in the lake and increasing farmer income. It is argued that the implementation of scientifically-sound environmental protection policies and the adoption of agricultural green development practices are crucial in reversing the current situation. By strictly adhering to these practices, the lake can be protected from pollution, and smallholder farmers can produce healthy food in an environmentally sustainable manner, while receiving fair compensation for the services they provide to society.[展开] ...
