Jingwen Zhao

is a postdoctoral researcher at Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. She received her PhD degree in Polymer Materials Science from ESPCI PSL, France in 2018, and her Masters degree from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2014. Her studies are focused on biomedical materials for drug delivery and tissue engineering, and the chemical and mechanical properties of soft matter. She has co-written, edited and published over 10 high-impact publications, presented at international conferences, and has contributed to patents and won numerous personal research grants.

Wenguo Cui

is a full professor at Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. He received his Bachelor degree in 2004 and PhD degree of Biomedical Engineering in 2009 from Southwest Jiao Tong University in China. In 2013-2015, he worked as a research scholar in Prof. David A. Weitz’s group in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences of Harvard University. His scientific interests are focused on the development of novel biomaterials and nanomaterials for tissue regeneration, drug delivery and disease treatment. He worked as PI for three projects of Key National Natural Science Foundation of China and ten other grants in Shanghai. He has published more than 110 papers in Adv Mater, PNAS, AFM and biomater (H=40, Citation>6200), 13 granted patents, one chief editor of 1 book and 9 book chapters as first or corresponding author. He is the deputy editor for “Mater Sci Eng:C” and “BMC Mater”. He has won the prize of Fundamental Bone Research Scholar in Chinese Medical Association, first prize of Scientific and Technological Progress of Shanghai, second prize of Outstanding Achievement Award in Science Research in the Ministry of Education twice and Chinse Medicine Award and Huaxia Medicine Award. His scientific research and leadership in recent years already demonstrated himself as one of the most outstanding researchers from the academic field.

Abstract

Despite great efforts and advancement in the treatment of cancer, tumor recurrence and metastasis remain significant challenges and demand novel therapy strategies. Recently, advances in biomaterials and drug delivery systems have facilitated the development of the local therapy of cancer, among which electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds show great promise owing to their porous structure, relatively large surface area, high drug loading capacity, similarity with the native extracellular matrix, and possibility of the combination of various therapies. Here, we review this rapidly developing field of electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds as a drug delivery system for cancer local therapy, in particular addressing stimuli-responsive drug release, as well as its combination with stem cell and immune therapy. Challenges and future perspectives are also discussed.
