Special Issue on “Application of Environmental Genomics in Bioremediation of Persistent Pollutants”

Background, Objectives and Scope

The ubiquity of persistent organic pollutants and emerging contaminants in environment has attracted increasing attention in recent years due to the risks of severe negative impacts on human and environmental health. As a proven efficient and cost-effective strategy, bioremediation has become a preferred strategy for treatment of a variety of contaminants in soils and aquatic systems. However, a lack of knowledge of the physiology, metabolic functions and evolutionary histories of functional microorganisms leads to unpredictably bioremediation outcomes – particularly when the functional microorganisms are part of a complex microbial community in-situ. The genomics tools can be used to study entire microbial communities in an environment, providing a comprehensive perspective that allows researchers to better understand the role of individual microbial populations in complex communities and to identify physical characteristics that affect bioremediation activities.
   For this special issue we call for papers to address and review the current state of knowledge regarding the application of environmental genomics in bioremediation of persistent organic pollutants and emerging contaminants. The main topics include but are not limited to the following:
  ● Biodegradation of persistent organic pollutants and emerging contaminants;
  ● Genomic mining of novel degradation genes;
  ● Biomonitoring of bioremediation processes at contaminated sites;
  ● Genomic insights into bioremediation processes;
  ● Impacts of persistent organic pollutants and emerging contaminants on environmental ecology;
  ● Genomic insights into metabolic activity of microorganisms and microbial consortia
