Portland cement adhesives serve as critical components in ultra-high voltage large tonnage insulators, significantly playing a vital role in the safety and stability of transmission line operation. This work systematically investigates the performance of Portland cement adhesives by controlling three key factors: cement-to-sand ratio, defoamer dosage and curing method with the aim of designing high-performance formulations suitable for ultra-high voltage transmission projects. It was found that with a cement-to-sand ratio of 2:1, the flexural and compressive strengths at 11 days reached 15.3 and 115.0 MPa respectively, and 28-day drying shrinkage rate was only 0.030%. The addition of defoamers promoted the formation of a denser structure, which significantly enhanced both mechanical properties and drying shrinkage characteristics. Under standard curing conditions, early-stage formation of AFt filled internal pores, cutting porosity by 1.85% compared with air-cured specimens and further mitigating shrinkage. Glass insulators bonded with the optimized adhesive satisfied the mechanical and thermomechanical requirements for ultra-high voltage heavy tonnage applications, as confirmed by corresponding performance tests.
