Abstract

With the increasing energy demand and the aggravation of environmental pollution, the rapid synthesis of green and efficient materials has attracted widespread attention. The flash joule heating (FJH) technique employs the Joule effect to rapidly heat materials through high-current-density pulsed currents, achieving temperatures exceeding 3000 K within a few milliseconds. The FJH technique exhibits distinct advantages in the synthesis of various materials, including carbon materials, single-atom materials, high-entropy alloys, and composite materials. This work primarily focuses on the synthesis of functional materials using the FJH technique, including the FJH devices and principles, the development of material synthesis via FJH, the effects of FJH factors, and the application of functional materials in environmental and energy fields. The structure and components can be regulated by the FJH process, and the performance is improved for the applications in hydrogen production, energy storage, and pollutant degradation. FJH represents a promising technique for the rapid synthesis of functional materials. Future research needs to further optimize equipment and process conditions to overcome challenges and promote the practical application of FJH technology.
