Carbon is arguably the most fascinating element in the universe. It has shaped our vibrant planet and built the essential bridge between the organic and inorganic worlds. Yet, carbon is also highly dynamic, existing in various forms across all Earth's spheres and driving active carbon cycles through specific mechanisms. Paradoxically, it can also become a destructive force; when oxidized into greenhouse gases, it can plunge the planet into extreme heat, threatening the continuity of life. These complex behaviors make carbon the core focus of global sustainable development and the exploration of extraterrestrial life, requiring not only modern multi-method monitoring but, more importantly, perspectives spanning geological time scales.
Currently, the global pursuit of carbon neutrality has catalyzed the deep integration of geoscience, the oil and gas industry, energy engineering, and environmental science, giving rise to a vital new interdisciplinary field ‘Geocarbon Science’. This field is dedicated to understanding carbon behavior within the Earth system and providing geological solutions for its development, utilization, and green management. Current research spans a wide range of areas, including fundamental processes (such as the deep-time carbon cycle and surface biogeochemistry), the future geo-energy industry (integrated exploration and exploitation of oil and gas alongside green geo-energy), engineered regulation (such as geological carbon storage and mineralization), and cutting-edge methods like AI and advanced monitoring.
The rapid and continuous expansion of Geocarbon Science has spurred numerous global organizations and initiatives. However, it has also exposed a critical publishing gap in the scientific community in that no existing journal adequately spans the full scope of this field. This impedes the synthesis of knowledge necessary to advance scalable, scientifically grounded climate, oil and gas, and green geo-energy solutions. Geocarbon Advances is purpose-built to fill this critical and well-defined gap. It will serve as the first premier, unified platform for high-impact research, seamlessly connecting fundamental Earth system science with the development and assessment of geological carbon solutions, and linking the Earth system, human disturbance, and the evolution of climate and life. To balance our planet from "black" to "green", this journal will accelerate knowledge exchange and cross-disciplinary innovation in the Deep-Time Carbon Cycle, Geological Carbon Utilization & Capture, and Regulation.

Let's forge Geocarbon Advances together to explore the forefront of carbon science, jointly deciphering the geological chain of carbon cycling, carbon enrichment, carbon utilization, carbon storage, and carbon regulation, driving the iterative transformation of the oil and gas industry, promoting green utilization of geological energy, and providing scientific solutions for human sustainable development.
