Background

ENGINEERING Management, is one of ENGINEERING journalsthe official journal of the Academy of Engineering, formerly known as Frontiers of Engineering Management which was first published in 2014 and ranked in Q1 in the JCR2024. It is an international research journal supervised by the Chinese Academy of Engineering, administered jointly by Chinese Academy of Engineering, Higher Education Press, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Tsinghua University, and co-published by Springer and Higher Education Press in English in both print and online versions quarterly. ENGINEERING Management provides a high-quality international platform for academic researchers, industry professionals and other constituent communities in the broad field of engineering management to impart and share the latest research results and knowledge in the form of research articles, reviews, comments and super engineering.

Aims and Scope

The rapid expansion of urban populations, along with escalating traffic congestion, energy consumption, and environmental challenges, has underscored the need for innovative and sustainable urban transportation and logistics solutions. Multi-mode systems—integrating air, ground, and underground transport modes—are emerging as critical to achieving energy-efficient, low-carbon urban mobility and logistics. These systems integrate emerging technologies, such as drones, autonomous ground vehicles, and smart infrastructure, with conventional transit networks to create seamless, efficient, and environmentally responsible urban transportation ecosystems.

This special issue seeks to explore the integration, optimization, and management of multi-mode urban mobility and logistics systems with a specific focus on energy-optimal performance. We invite contributions that address the synergistic operation of diverse transport modes—including aerial, terrestrial, and subsurface—to enhance system-wide energy efficiency, reduce emissions, and improve urban livability. We welcome research that examines technological advancements, operational strategies, system design, policy frameworks, and real-world implementations aimed at minimizing energy consumption while maintaining or improving service quality and accessibility.

Topics to be covered include, but are not limited to

Integrated design and operation of multi-mode mobility and logistics networks

Energy-optimal routing, scheduling, and fleet management across transport modes
