Abstract

This study investigates the ecological and chemical status of the Greenmoore ponds, Woodcote, UK, to identify factors driving biodiversity loss. A biodiversity assessment was conducted in situ using standardized dip-net sampling at 20 water/biota and 10 soil points across the upper and lower ponds, over two seasons (winter: January–February; summer: June–July), alongside analyses of water, leaf debris, and soil samples for microbiological, physicochemical, nutrient, and trace metal parameters. Pollutant speciation modelling (using PHREEQC), spatial mapping, and statistical analyses (using Spearman’s and Kendall’s correlation, and multivariate statistics) were employed to evaluate ecological integrity. The results revealed a substantial decline in biodiversity compared with historical surveys (Pond Action 2000), with total recorded organism abundance falling by approximately 52–60% relative to baseline counts, indicating ongoing ecological degradation. Concentrations of phosphates (0.445–0.607 mg/L), aluminium (0.337–0.447 mg/L), iron (0.746–1.616 mg/L), manganese (0.246–0.574 mg/L), and zinc (0.213–0.217 mg/L) exceeded UK freshwater quality limits for natural waters (0.10 mg/L for PO4- P, 0.4 mg/L for Al, 1.0 mg/L for Fe, 0.05 mg/L for Mn, and 0.008–0.125 mg/L for Zn). Speciation modelling revealed a high prevalence of toxic pollutant species, including free Fe2+, Mn2+, Zn2+, Al3+, Al(OH)2+, AlOH2+, Al(OH)4−, H2PO4−, HPO42−, and FeH2PO4+, which are likely contributing to the observed decline in pond biodiversity. These results, supported by Spearman’s and Kendall’s correlation analysis, multivariate statistics, and spatial analyses, identified multiple factors contributing to the degraded conditions of the ponds. Key contributors to pond degradation include excessive leaf debris, soil runoff, animal bathing, washing of farm implements and machinery, and potential inputs from sewage or water treatment facilities, alongside broader industrial and agricultural activities. These findings underscore the urgent need for restoration measures to improve ecological integrity, with priority actions including leaf debris removal, buffer-zone establishment to intercept soil and farm runoff, and restricted access for animal bathing and equipment washing. The study provides evidence-based recommendations for pond rehabilitation and offers a Framework that could be adapted, with site-specific validation for monitoring and managing small freshwater ecosystems. More broadly, the results highlight the importance of integrating ecological diagnostics, chemical speciation, and statistical and spatial analyses to inform conservation policy and the sustainable management of freshwater habitats.
