Trauma systems in Italy: the Lombardy experience
The epidemiology of major trauma in Italy reflects the current European trend. Most injuries come from road crash, domestic, and workplace accidents. During recent decades, the improvement of trauma systems led to a dramatic reduction of preventable deaths. This article describes the history, development, and current organization of the Lombardy trauma system, which has been one of the first to be developed in Italy.
