Abstract

Ultrasonic-assisted spinning process (UASP) has attracted widespread attention owing to its advantages in enhancing material formability, reducing forming loads, and improving forming quality. The key mechanisms involve friction reduction and material softening enabled by ultrasonic vibrations, which have attracted significant interest. In this study, an arc-contact friction testing apparatus was proposed based on the thickness-direction transmission characteristics of ultrasonic vibration. The influence of parameters such as normal pressure, ultrasonic amplitude, and ultrasonic incident angle on the friction reduction effect of the cylindrical part was investigated. The results indicated that, after applying ultrasonic vibration, the frictional force and friction coefficient decreased slightly, whereas the surface roughness increased under the same normal pressure. Notably, the evolution trend of the friction characteristics under different normal pressures was not affected by ultrasonic vibration. With an increase in the ultrasonic amplitude, the frictional force and coefficient decreased significantly, whereas the surface roughness increased. The effect of the ultrasonic amplitude on the friction characteristics was also investigated in real time. The ultrasonic incident angle had a limited effect on the ultrasonic vibration at the contact interface, resulting in a relatively low influence on the structural characteristics of the contact interface. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the friction-reduction effect was verified through numerical simulation. When the ultrasonic amplitude is greater than 3 µm, it is necessary to consider the influence of the friction-reduction effect on the forming of the ribbed cylindrical part.
