Abstract

During most of the XXth century, periodontal diseases were considered to be one of the most serious problems facing public healthcare services because they affect the majority of the people above 35 years of age. Moreover, all the people were believed to be at an equal risk of developing these pathologies. The understanding of the role of causative bacterial agents in pathogenesis of periodontitis, mechanisms of congenital and acquired immunity, and regulation of the inflammatory processes at the molecular and cellular levels made it possible to propose new methods for the treatment and prophylaxis of periodontal pathology.
