A study of the surface of acryl-plastic-based facing dental materials

Abstract

Using laser profilometry and scanning electron microscopy combined with electron magnetic resonance imaging, the authors studied the microstructure of the surface of acryl-plastic-based facing dental materials Sinfony (3M-ESPE), Solidex (Shofu), Oxomat (Stoma), Artglass (Heraeus Kulzer), Sculpture/Fiberkor (Jeneric Pentron), Vitapan Monopast (Vita), Biodent K+W Plus (De Trey), and Sinma-M (Stoma). The results were compared with the parameters of natural tooth enamel surface.The study found that the microstructure and microrelief of Sinfony (3M-ESPE), a hybrid light polymerization material, is closest to natural tooth enamel parameters, because the material is phase-homogenic, practically non-porous, and has high surface purity. High hydrophobicity, structural homogenicity, and high density reduce the probability of the aggregation of oral fluid microbial and chemical agents on the material surface, which is a predictor of good long-term clinical results.
