Abstract

BACKGROUND: Currently, leading gastroenterologists note the insufficient effectiveness of standard pharmacotherapy for irritable bowel syndrome, which is the basis for the search for new non-drug technologies.

AIM: is to evaluate the efficacy of drinking mineral water modified with selenium in the treatment of patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: There have been carried out some observations of 79 patients suffering from irritable bowel syndrome patients at the age of 18 to 65 years old. By simple sampling 2 groups were formed: the patients of the control group (n=38) had pharmacotherapy in accordance with clinical recommendations; the patients of the main group (n=41) were additionally prescribed low-mineralized mineral water "Psyzh". We used a visual analogue scale, total days estimate with symptoms of the disease and medical cases during the year before and after the course of treatment to control the efficacy.

RESULTS: The positive dynamics of the measures studied immediately after the treatment was higher in the main group by 9–10%. At the same time, the number of total days with the symptoms of the disease and requests for medical care within a year after the course of the treatment was significantly smaller (p <0.05) in this observation group due to the use of selenium-modified mineral water "Psyzh" in the treatment program, its regulatory effect on the secretory-motor function of the gastrointestinal tract, a sufficient antioxidant effect, as well as an increase in the pharma potential of the used medicine.

CONCLUSION: The inclusion of potable mineral waters modified with selenium in the treatment programs of the patients with irritable bowel syndrome contributes to improving the effectiveness of therapeutic measures.
