The influence of physical exercises on histo- and ultrastructure of the gastrocnemius muscle

Abstract

The objective of the present work was to study ultrastructural changes in the gastrocnemius muscle of 20 adult male rats undergoing moderate physical stress for 1.5-2 hours twice weekly during 1, 3, and 5 months. The histological study was carried out with the use of electron microscopic and morphometric techniques. It demonstrated congestion of blood in arterioles and venules, an increase in the number of eosinophils, and enhanced aggregation of formed elements of blood. The ultrastructural study revealed the increase of the number and size of mitochondria, broadening of channels in sarcoplasmic reticulum and enlargement of micropinocytic vesicles in the capillary endothelium. These changes are interpreted as manifestations of compensatory adaptation to the hypoxic conditions developing under effect of physical exercises.
