POSTMODERN HISTORIOGRAPHY OF PSYCHIATRY: M. FOUCAULT, R. CASTEL, M. GAUCHET, AND G. SWAIN
The paper discusses the different versions of French historiography of psychiatry, developed in the XX century second half. The author analyzes the strategy of analysis of the history of psychiatry in the works of M. Foucault, R. Castel, M. Gauchet, and G. Swain. These projects demonstrate that psychiatry is not only a science of mental illness that has a specific organic substrate and neurophysiological correlates, but also the science of man, whose image (as well as psychiatry itself) varies from age to age.
