Abstract

A clinical and MRI study of 39 patients with syringomyelia, which began at an early age, was performed. The results showed that in 74, 4% of cases pediatric syringomyelia begins with development of scoliosis. There were identified three main variants of start and course of syringomyelia in childhood, combined with scoliosis: 1 - lack of neurological symptoms for a long time and a progressive-relapsing course in adulthood, 2 - rapid development of pain, and then other neurological symptoms with a progressive-relapsing course, 3-development of symptoms of foramen magnum and the subsequent formation of remitting course of other neurological symptoms. Neuroimaging studies have shown a decrease of cystic index, as well as significant reduction in the degree of malformation in patients with Chiari syringomyelia of an early age during examination after 15 year- period from the onset.
