Fibronectin content and cellular composition of peritoneal exudate in peritonitis

Abstract

Without denying the great importance of general body resistance in peritonitis, recently, many researchers tend to consider peritonitis as a kind of local inflammation with new pathogenetic and therapeutic concepts derived from this approach. It is known that the course and outcome of microbial inflammation are largely determined by the severity of local antimicrobial protection, which is primarily determined by antibacterial properties of the inflammatory exudate. Among the reactions of bacteria neutralization, the leading role is assigned to phagocytosis, which occurs with the participation of neutrophils and macrophages. The efficiency of phagocytosis, in turn, depends, first, on the number and quality (i.e., functional state) of the phagocytic cells and, second, on the activity of humoral factors of phagocytosis, called opsonins.
