V.N.Karamzin, the son of the outstanding Russian writer and historian Nikolai Mikhailovich Karamzin, bequeathed a house to the Simbirsk provincial zemstvo in 1881 so that the zemstvo would set up a charitable institution in the provincial town or in its vicinity using the capital raised from its sale, writing on the building an inscription: “In memory of Alexandra Ilinichna Karamzina, it was erected in memory of Nikolai Mikhailovich Karamzin”.
