Pediatrics as an independent medical specialty began to develop in Russia in the 30s-40s of the last century. At that time, Russia had one of the highest infant mortality rates. Assistance provided to mothers and children was based on charitable collections; no government funds were allocated for this purpose; there were no doctors who dealt only with children's diseases.
