The objective of this work is to explore the role of testosterone in weight control by examining its impact on metabolism, muscle mass, and fat distribution. The author aims to highlight the physiological mechanisms by which testosterone influences body composition, educating healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, on the importance of assessing and managing testosterone levels in their patients. The intention of the review is to emphasize the significance of understanding testosterone’s role in addressing hormonal imbalances and improving weight management, particularly in populations at risk for low testosterone levels, such as aging men and individuals with obesity or metabolic disorders.
Objective: This study examined the subjective experiences of mothers who abused their infants and young children. This qualitative inductive study comprised semi-structured interviews with six mothers who received public support to prevent the abuse of their infants and young children.
Methods: We analyzed the results qualitatively and inductively. We summarized mothers’ experiences into four core categories: justifying husbands with no intention of protecting their families, internalizing both the crying self and the self who strives to raise the child perfectly, falling into a vicious loop of abuse and having suicidal thoughts, and controlling the vicious abuse loop with the emergence of faint hope.
Results: Our findings indicate that the causes of maternal abuse included the crying self-seeking love, an imbalance from wanting perfection in child-rearing, negative factors regarding the husband, a lack of opportunities to nurture maternal instincts, and the child’s behavior serving as the trigger. Mothers in situations of abuse experienced uncontrollable anger, vicious loops of abuse, and suicidal thoughts. Abuse was prevented by the emergence of a glimmer of hope through budding feelings of attachment and various forms of support aiming to control the vicious loop.
Conclusions: Experts’ support encouraged mothers to regain control and experience hope.
Background: Pressure ulcers are preventable patient safety issues that adversely affect healthcare costs and outcomes. Senior nursing students are expected to be prepared to contribute to pressure ulcer prevention based on their clinical education and training; however, evidence suggests that gaps in knowledge and preparedness may still exist.
Objective: To assess nursing students’ knowledge of pressure ulcer staging, prevention, risks, and wound description, and to examine differences according to participant characteristics.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 200 nursing students from two governmental universities in Jordan; however, 184 completed surveys were included in the final analysis. The Pieper-Zulkowski Pressure Ulcer Knowledge Test was used. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) at the p ≤ .05 significance level.
Results: Overall, students demonstrated poor knowledge (M = 31.33, SD = 8.95). Students from the University of Jordan and those who accessed online information had significantly higher prevention scores ( p < .05).
Conclusions: The findings underscore the need to develop targeted teaching, training, and curricula to enhance students’ knowledge of pressure ulcers.
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of an oral peppermint lozenge as a treatment for postoperative nausea and vomiting among females undergoing a gynecological operative procedure under general anesthesia.
Methods: Prospective design with consented subjects randomly assigned to either the control or the intervention group. A total of 132 subjects were assigned to the intervention group. Postoperative nausea was assessed upon admission to the post-anesthesia care unit using the Aldrete Scoring System and the Discomfort and Intervention Assessment Measure. The intervention was administered to subjects when the assessment indicated nausea. Data was collected from subjects in the control group for comparison purposes.
Results: Demographically, there were minor variances between the control and intervention groups, none of which were statistically significant. Of the 12 subjects who required the intervention, it successfully treated their postoperative nausea 9 times, with 3 of the subjects requiring the administration of an antiemetic.
Conclusions: Consideration for oral peppermint, as treatment of postoperative nausea, should be explored. The results of this study demonstrate its ability to resolve the experience with no adverse effects noted, and decreasing the need for an antiemetic drug.
