Human health has become a global focus with growing attention being given to both basic medical and applied health-related clinical research. Among the various health risks, physical inactivity is ranked fourth for premature death by the World Health Organization. As society looks for ways to improve health and wellbeing, the impact of physical activity (PA) has received and continues to receive growing attention. A rising demand exists to learn more concerning the mechanisms responsible for the health fitness benefits of PA and exercise, the threat of a sedentary lifestyle on health, disease prevention and rehabilitation, treatment and rehabilitation for sport injuries, the nutritional requirement for physically active populations, and the impact of PA and exercise on age-related health challenges. Most importantly, individuals living in different geographic regions, under different climates, and different socioeconomic conditions inevitably face unique PA and exercise barriers.
Sports medicine is an interdisciplinary field of biological sciences incorporating basic science, public health, and clinical perspectives for studying PA, exercise, and sport-related issues. Addressing concerns involving sports medicine and health require scientific investigation into areas of physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, nutrition, public health, epidemiology, and gerontology utilizing large and small data sets. Clearly, an increased demand exists for an additional journal where scientists and practitioners alike can report their findings in this developing field.
An increasing number of scientific investigations regarding PA and exercise are being completed and submitted for publication each year. However, existing journals are experiencing a growing difficulty to publish these research outcomes in a timely manner. Chengdu Sport University (CDSU) with over 60 years of experience in scientific investigation in sports medicine, clinical practice, public health, and education is a sponsor of this new journal and has developed collaborations with various professional societies to include the Chinese Association of Sports Medicine (CASM), the China Association of Exercise Physiology and Biochemistry (CAEPB), the Sports Medicine Branch of China Association of Chinese Medicine (CACM), and the China Sport Science Society (CSSS). While fostering these professional relationships, CDSU has also developed strong collaborative relationships with more than twenty global higher institutions of learning. Through these collaborations, a group of world-renowned experts from various scientific fields have assembled and are willing to serve as members of the Editorial Board to provide established excellence in scientific intellect and experience to develop and promote this new journal. This world-class Editorial Board of scientists has the professional expertise needed to provide exceptional support for the development and launching of the journal, Sports Medicine and Health Science (SMHS), in order to fill existing literature gaps for scientists and practitioners working in this interdisciplinary field.
The journal's focus is on sports medicine and health science disciplines as related to PA, exercise, and public health. Both disciplines are concerned with basic sciences in areas of physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, nutrition, immunology, biomechanics, motor control and learning, epidemiology, and gerontology; applied and clinical sciences including prevention and treatment of sports injuries, preventive medicine, chronic disease prevention and treatment/rehabilitation, physical therapy, orthopaedics, exercise rehabilitation, exercise prescription, complementary/alternative medicine such as Traditional Chinese Medicine, Tai Chi, Yoga, Pilates, acupuncture and manipulation, and public health areas such as PA and exercise promotion, epidemiology, fitness, and wellbeing.
The aim of the journal is to provide a merit-based, high-quality global publication for manuscripts focusing on sports medicine and health science. This journal intends to fill a need for the rapid growth of scientific investigation in the field of sport and health science worldwide. The SMHS journal will target readers at academic institutions including scientists, research specialists, professors, graduate students, and practitioners including physicians, physical therapists, athletic trainers, health fitness professionals, and other personnel in the sport fitness industry. The type of submissions published in SMHS include original research, reviews, brief reviews, commentary and communications, clinical trials, and case studies.
This new journal, SMHS, will also focus on emerging sports medicine and public health concerns associated with PA, exercise, physical inactivity and sedentary lifestyle, and injury prevention and treatment/rehabilitation resulting from sports, PA, and exercise. The following research areas are a selective list of “hot topics”:
·Basic biological research emphasizing the cellular mechanisms affected by PA and exercise and the consequence of physical inactivity using both animals and human models;
·Epidemiology, clinical trials, and population-based research investigating the prevention and treatment of chronic disease caused by the lack of PA and exercise, interventions on metabolic, cardiopulmonary, cancer, obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, osteoporosis, muscle atrophy and sarcopenia, Parkinson's, neuromuscular disorders, Alzheimer's, and mental health;
·Health issues arising among the aging population;
·Prevention and treatment of chronic disease and sport injury with Traditional Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine;
·Prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of sports injuries to muscles, ligaments, joints, and bones;
·Nutrition and nutritional supplementation in physically active and exercising individuals;
·Sport injures occurring to elite and Olympic athletes.
We sincerely welcome and look forward to the excellent manuscripts you submit for publication in the journal of Sports Medicine and Health Science.
