Special Issue on “Environmental Antibiotics and Antibiotic Resistance”

The imprudent use of antibiotics in medicine and livestock production leads to the ubiquitous dissemination of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance bacteria and genes in the environment. It is not only an emerging environmental problem but also becomes an immediate threat to human health. Consequently, World health Organization considers this as one of the biggest health issues of the 21st century. Recent research has focused on occurrence, transport, transformation of antibiotics in the environment, and the associated conservation, dissemination and proliferation of antibiotic resistance genes. However, many scientific questions and technical problems still remain unresolved. These could include, but not limited to, detection and quantification of trace level antibiotics and their metabolites in the complex environmental matrices, microbial physiology and ecology of antibiotic resistant bacteria and genes, relationship between antibiotics and antibiotic resistant microbial ecologies, and effective treatment technology of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes. In addition, novel methods and technologies are needed to provide insights into antibiotic resistance in the environment, and promote the knowledge on understanding and solving the relevant global environmental issues.

In this special issue, we will update the status quo of environmental fate of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance. This special issue will attempt to collect the information on the complicated relationships between antibiotics and antibiotic resistance in the environment. Papers are called now including, but not limited to, the following topics:
 ● Occurrence of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance in multiple environmental media
 ● Development and application of determination methods for environmental antibiotics and antibiotic resistance
 ● Impact of antibiotics, heavy metals and other factors on the development and perseveration of antibiotic resistance in the environment
 ● Environmental behaviours and characteristics of antibiotics, antibiotic resistance bacteria and genes
 ● Impact of environmental antibiotic resistance bacteria and genes on human health and clinical antibiotic resistance
 ● Effective treatment technology of wastewater containing antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes
